Rahul joins protesters against Nido Tania's death, assures strict action

NEW  DELHI/ITANAGAR, Feb 3: AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi  Monday vowed "very swift action" into the killing of a student from Arunachal Pradesh Nido Tania in New Delhi recently and asked Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to order a judicial probe, as he stepped in to address concerns of people from the northeast in the wake of attacks on them.

The Union Home Ministry, meanwhile, directed Delhi Police to sensitize all police stations in the capital about people from the northeast living in their respective jurisdiction and resolve their grievances.

The Delhi High Court also took suo motu cognisance of the death of the student Nido Tania last week after he was allegedly beaten by some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar and asked the Centre to file a report on the incident by Wednesday. Rahul met protesting student groups from the northeast who had gathered at Jantar Mantar demanding that those involved in the attack on the student be brought to book.

Asserting that "what has happened was unacceptable", Rahul in his brief address said,"....You can expect a very strict action and detailed study done by a committee on the issues of north-easterners of this country. We are trying to move forward on that."

Minister of State for Minority Affairs Ninong Ering earlier in the day said that Rahul has asked the Home Minister to order the judicial probe and provide justice to the family.

Wake up: alarm is ringing

Anirudha Bhakat Chutia

The time was around 8.30pm and I was in the newsroom. Suddenly, breaking news came in from Biswanath Chariali. 10 people killed by unidentified miscreants along the Assam-Arunachal border in Chauldhua in Bihali of Sonitpur district. And soon this report spread like a wildfire throughout the region. Politicians and organizations condemned the incident. But who were those unidentified miscreants? As the incident occurred near Assam-Arunachal border, many local residents pointed finger towards Arunachal Pradesh, which happens to be a sister of Assam itself. But was it true?

As the detailed report came from ground zero, we got to know that those who carried out the attack comprised of more than 500 people. Now the big question, which everyone ignored at that point of time, is it possible for civilians to carry out such large attack?

The population in border areas is seemingly low in density. So, if all the perpetrators were really from Arunachal they have to mobilize from different parts (other adjoining areas). Again if this is to be believed, it would have easily caught the eyes of many people, even that of Assam. But do we have any such evidence? So, is there any armed movement in the area?

From the very beginning of this episode, the role of one Vivek Das a CPI (ML) leader has been alleged by Arunachal Pradesh. It has been alleged that it is Vivek Das who prompted the violence in the area. If we go by this version, no doubt many more queries will pour into the incident, but it is time to investigate upon it. The very first sight that caught my eyes was when I saw the bodies of victims covered with the red flags of CPI (ML), which sends a clear communist signal. One cannot deny it. Moreover, off the late, we are witnessing a Maoist uprising in Northeast. The government of both the concerned states should step in and look into the matter.

The main problem that followed this inhumane massacre is the heartless act of economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh. If people think that by economic blockade the problems can be solved, we would have never reached the age of globalization. Hatred and such blockades can never give justice to the victims. Nor will it bring the perpetrators to the book of law. It will just worsen the relationship of two brothers. The entire episode needs to be handled in a proper way. People of both the states should make it sure that by dividing them, someone else cannot fulfill their vested interest. Because if it happens, the souls of the victims will never forgive us, nor will our forefathers or God.

The esteemed organizations which are staging this economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh should think over it again. Just because a section of the society thinks that those who carried out the massacre were from Arunachal Pradesh, doesn’t justify this. We need to think in a broad perspective now. We should act promptly hand in hand to find out the root cause. The local residents of the border areas, organizations and government of both the states should sit together, in order to find out the root cause that led to the present situation. An eye for an eye is not the solution. We need to move beyond that. We need to realize that it is Assam and Arunachal which will suffer for this ongoing crisis. The perpetrators are at large and it’s them who will gain from this. We need to think beyond border dispute, because the perpetrators are taking advantage of the border dispute between Assam and Arunachal. If we don’t wake up at this alarm, it will be too late.

Since time immemorable Assam and Arunachal Pradesh shares a very special bond. It was the time when even the Britishers did not came to this part of the world. Was there any border dispute then. Arunachal Pradesh took birth from Assam. Besides that, the culture and traditions of the tribes of Arunachal and that of Assam have a vast similarity which even no anthropologist and historian can deny. So, why are we fighting among each other? Isn’t it a fight between two brothers?

We the people of Arunachal and other Northeastern states are also Indian like anybody else living in anywhere in Delhi or any part of Indian and have equal right to enjoy right and freedom like any other Indian.”

AYA demands culprits should be punished and justice be delivered at the earliest to regain faith of our people out there.  The Association prayed to Almighty God to bestow enough strength to bereaved family and for heavenly peace of the departed soul of late Tania.

Initiate talks on boundary disputes, NCP urges Govts

ITANAGAR, Feb 3: The state NCP today advised the Arunachal Pradesh and Assam governments to initiate dialogue on the interstate boundary dispute ‘by involving the central government’ to solve the issue once and for all.

In a press release, it said the decades long interstate boundary dispute came about because the one-man Bordoloi Commission ‘had simply drawn an imaginary boundary line between Assam and the then NEFA in the foothill areas of the NEFA to the advantage of Assam.’ ‘The boundary commission was neither represented by the then people of the NEFA, nor was their consent sought. By doing so, Bordoloi had violated natural justice, adopted partiality, and overlooked the permanent interest of the then people of the NEFA who were very simple, honest and educationally backward in comparison to the people of Assam,’ the party stated in a press release. The party also pointed to the report of the retired HC judge Tarun Chatterjee-led commission that around 70-80 percent disputed land along the interstate boundary should be given back to Arunachal Pradesh, and demanded action against CPI (ML) leader Vivek Das and Assam’s forest and police officials who encroached on Arunachal territory and carried out eviction as soon as the three-member commission had left.

Nido Tania was victim of racial attack

Dear Editor,

I am shocked and pain to know that Nido Tania was beaten to death by group of men at a crowded commercial locality in South Delhi on 29th Jan’2014 for simple reasons about his hairstyle and mongoloid features. Late Nido Tania was neither criminal nor thief. How can a group of people beat him so mercilessly, since it was a simple altercation between the individuals? It is clear case of racial discrimination to the people of NE region by the mainland people. Our hearts are beating with sadness. In this connection there was a discussion in ‘Times Now’ new channel anchored by Arnab Goswami at 9 pm on 31/1/2014 for 45 minutes without break.

There were 7 (seven) members in the panel one from BJP, NESO Chairman Samuel Bhattacharya, social activist Bina Lakshmi,  Mr Chari, Mr Rahul Iswar and Arunachal East MP Ninong Ering. In the debate Chari, Rahul Ishwar and minister Ering tried to cover-up this incident as non-racial but admitted that it is deplorable and condemnable. Ninong Ering even shouted angrily on Arnab Goswami alleging that media people are responsible for exaggeration of the incident. But Arnab Goswami never submitted before Ering. We were expecting lots from Mr Ninong Ering but he was trying to under play the racial attack. Had Kiren Rijiju been in the discussion matter would have been different.

It’s a fact that NE People/students are facing discrimination in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai etc. So our elected representatives must protect the interest of NE region including hate crime otherwise they must go for paving way for energetic youth leaders.

Further, we must salute Arnab Goswami, Senior Journalist for showcasing that people from NE region too have potential in area of journalism. Govt, must recognize him and even I appeal state Govt to invite Arnab Goswami in the coming statehood day at Itanagar by honoring his ability, courage and knowledge.

Yours,

Bali Potom

Feeling enlightened

Dear Editor,

It was an eye opener to read Amar Sangno’s article “Arunachal lives on razor edge” published in today’s edition of your daily. Hope entire Arunachalee have read and understood it, especially the so called elite elected leaders and pressure groups of state. Our future is dark, suffocated with lack of inter district connectivity. Just imagine if economic blockade lasts for one or two month, I suppose entire state would witness unrest and chaos. We are getting taste of it now. The economic blockade is affecting each and every individual's normal life. It also created unavoidable fear psychosis among Arunachalees who passes through Assam to reach various destinations.

What happened recently in Tarasso is highly condemnable, no human would ever appreciate it and no human would ever want it to happen, however, who really is behind it is still question of uncertainty. Assam-Arunachal boundary tension was there but it doesn't mean that some Guwahati based electronic media air the unfortunate incident as if India-Pakistan is at war. Instead of acting as responsible citizen of India, surprisingly it's like adding more fuel to fire.  For god sake! We subscribe your channel too and honestly we admire and love it too. We are Indian and most importantly we are neighbours too. Please remember that two different countries are not fighting for piece of land. We had age old relation and it matters a lot.   Assuming what we might have to face as year pass by its high time that our elder’s manifest and give concrete thought about starting proper border trade with China and Myanmar. It is to retrospect what former BJP MP Kiren Rijiju said, India’s Look East Policy is incomplete without linking trade route with China and Myanmar. It is true that trade route with these two countries is only way out to get freedom from anti-Arunachal elements of Assam. Pray whoever represents us at center next time; represent Arunachalee people and not the political party. And lastly, I highly appreciate Amar Sangno for letting realize what outcome we may see in near future.

Yours,

TK Nyanya

The Silent Woman behind Creation of History on Republic day

Dear Editor,

While the dance and tablue team members received heaps of congratulations and nationwide appreciations for their magnetic performance during republic day celebration at Delhi, the real soul behind success of Rikampada dance and Ajilamu tablue has not been disclosed to the public of Arunachal Pradesh. The dedicated and tireless soul is none other than Madam Mamata Riba Naksang, Director Art and Culture. Her effective liasioning with North East Zonal Culture Centre Dimapur and Ministry of Defense, Culture affairs and of course the Tuki led State Govt has finally paid off and for the first time in history of Arunachal, a dance troup of 150 young souls and team of mesmerizing Ajilamu dance tablue captured imagination of the country. Madam Mamta Riba Naksang not only deserves a true gold medal but wild round of applause from the Nyishi, Monpa and Serdukpen community in particular and others in general for leaving a permanent imprint in the psyche of the nation towards richness of Arunachalee culture. I am sure the legendary soul of Lt Tomo Riba, father of madam Mamta, too enjoyed the colourfull cultural display on the republic Day and felt proud of his daughter.

Yours,

Tarh Tugung

People should not be judged by colour of skin

Dear Editor,

Cosmetic surgery wonderfully retrofits and alters a ‘misbegotten’ face into near-perfect geometrical symmetry. In an economic structure based on the fulfillment of desires, a world dominated by the visual medium, only the rare youngster feels she has an ‘acceptable’ face, one that matches and fits the ‘standard’ image so bluntly being propagated by the commercial media. Hence the jingle goes: ‘Un-Fair skin? That’s why they are all unfair. Sunrays, dust, pollution, pollen, and particles attack you. But it doesn’t have to be so! Buy Fair. Within this much time, you will metamorphose into a demigoddess that floats four inches above the ground on ether of divine fairness. Shield yourself. Take care.’ Suppose I am neither fair nor lovely. Everywhere I turn, they tell me I am not okay. To be okay, I am directed to chase the unreal image of the computer-generated, photo shopped, aesthetically manipulated demigoddess. I’m just a natural born dark skinned human. I didn’t know my ‘kind’ were socially unacceptable. And since thousands of rupees and many years worth of magical potions and miraculous lotions couldn’t transmogrify me into the ethereal demigoddess whom men and women worship (or so they want young women to believe), in order to justify my natural presence on the planet, I am compelled to consider the terrifying prospect of going under the knife of exact science, so to speak. Let the masked surgeon slash, cut, and stitch my ‘misbegotten,’ ‘unwanted,’ ‘Un-Fair,’ geometrically erroneous face into a perfect progression of the divine ratio. Must I justify the way I am?

No, Nido Tania was not on this side of the gender divide. So what could have possibly been wrong with his face? He was not Un-Fair. Men are still reluctant to slap holy cream on their temples because it is harder to sell men as an object of pleasure to women. He was not outraged in a bazaar because he resembled material Madonna. Why, then, did his face deserve to be the focus of arbitrary hatred? The last time soldiers of the PLA displayed their Karate skills on the banks of Brahmaputra was in sixty two. He couldn’t have been mistaken for an enemy spy, miles in the wrong side of the cartographic line and smack dab in the centre, while our own intrepid jawans faced bullets fired from similar faces around the circumference. Quite a puzzle, it appears.

They tell me that unless I am as slim as a bamboo flute, there won’t be any music in life. So I should go hungry. I am supposed to go hungry, to remain semi-starved. Only then, as is the accepted rule, would I harmonize with the perverse demands of a visually obsessed culture. Another lady from Manipur, I hear, has been starving herself for decade plus years now. We are not living in the Auschwitz ghetto, the lady and I, and there is no famine even. But that many years of hunger, still I see her face nowhere. I see plenty Fair bamboos on billboards, posters, magazines, LCD screens. The absence therein of Un-Fair faces is fine by me. But the lady in question is in no way Un-Fair. Yet I don’t see her face.

Richard Loitham also wore glasses on his face like Nido Tania. I can’t say whether the spectacles are a common hate-crime trigger in both these cases where boys were teenaged students from NE.

Anyway, this much ado about eyes, ears, and noses sounds fatuous and betrays an inordinate preoccupation with appearances. What’s in a name? What’s in a face? Maybe something that need be said. To be killed in cold blood because one does not fit an unreal standard of social acceptance is, nevertheless, injustice. These are sad times when one is ‘judged by the color of the skin’ rather than ‘the content of the character.’ RIP Nido Tania.

Yours,

Rupa Joram,

SKUAST, Kashmir.

Role of civil society is appreciable

The Tarasso incident which claimed 10 lives has deteriorated relation between two neighbours Assam and Arunachal. Economic blockade imposed against Arunachal by Assam based organizations have brought life to standstill and is harming already deteriorating relation. However large number of civil society group from both the states is trying their best to improve the relation. Yesterday, people of Kimin-Kakoi area of Arunachal Pradesh and Nowboicha (Pohumara)-Kakoi area of Assam organized a joint peace meeting and resolved to maintain peace and tranquility in Assam-Arunachal boundary area. The meeting held under the initiative of Assam Arunachal Border Peace Committee while condemning the Behali-Tarasso incident urged both the Govts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to take necessary action against the persons involved and responsible for the incident.

In another move, Student Union Movement of Arunachal (SUMA), All Papum Pare District Youth Association, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Gurkha Student Union (AAGSU), Assam-Arunachal Labour Union Joint Committee, Assam Arunachal Border Committee, Adibashi Student Association of Assam and Minority Student Association also convened a meeting to maintain peace among citizens of two state. The apex student body AAPSU recently held joint press conference with Assamese citizens living in Arunachal and appealed for calm. Such initiative by civil society organizations of Assam and Arunachal is highly appreciable. The boundary row which has not been solved for such a long time is due to failure of both the state and union governments.  The ordinary citizens should not suffer for no fault of their. In the meanwhile, the Assam based organizations should understand the agony of fellow citizen and lift economic blockade against Arunachal.
